Effective Leadership

Effective leadership is an integral part of the success of any venture. Without effective leadership, whole ventures threaten to fall into chaos, loosing money, time, and creating a whole host of other difficulties. However, effective leadership does not come naturally, even to people who are born leaders, or have some special charisma or talent. That is why it is important to teach your team leaders effective leadership skills instead of relying on their innate abilities to get them and their teams through the project.

There are several methods of teaching effective leadership skills to employees; scholarship and experiential.  Using these methods in tandem generally produces the best result.   The first of these methods is scholarship, or book learning.  Studying effective leadership skills from books or videos academically, while not the most exciting thing in the world, can serve as a first step in learning effective leadership skills.  Book learning and formal study lays the foundation for the training that comes later.

Effective leadership isn’t about books; it is about doing.  This is where experiential learning comes into play.  In order to be an effective leader, a person must take an active role, not merely direct everyone else.  To this end, effective leadership training must include lots of hands on experience.  Shadowing someone who is an effective leader is a fantastic way to learn how to become an effective leader.  In this way people learn the most important skill of effective leadership: that knowing what the team needs, in terms of support, enthusiasm and encouragement, and when it needs those things from its leader.
