Transformational Leadership People will follow someone who inspires them. People with passion and vision can achieve great things. Tasks are best accomplished by injecting them with energy and enthusiasm. This is how transformational leadership functions and they are the assumptions that those who place all of their faith in transformational leadership share. To be clear, such assumptions are not entirely unwarranted. Working with a transformational leader can be an exhilarating experience, for a transformational leader truly inspires us, and they genuinely care about our growth and success.
Where does transformational leadership begin? It begins with a person’s ability to develop a vision. Whether this vision is developed on his or her own or in cooperation with the members of a team is irrelevant. In either case, the crucial factor is that the transformational leader buys into the vision completely and that they have the skill, commitment and enthusiasm to sell it. Transformational leadership seeks always for ways forward, guided by this vision even when the way is not apparent. Furthermore, transformational leadership draws great strength from a willingness to accept that the inevitable failures and unforeseen obstacles are merely setbacks; they have an ability to keep others motivated regardless of the level of strain. |
Transformational leadership, the infusion of vision into the veins, is powerful, but like all leadership approaches, transformational leadership has its time and place. When taken to extremes, or used out of context, transformational leadership can do more harm than good. Sometimes passion is mistaken for truth. While some transformational leaders successfully lead the charge through the cavern and chasms of change, others have led the charge straight off a cliff. Developing the ability to inspire others to work toward a vision is only half of what is needed to be a great transformational leader. The ability of inner vision is the other half, the knowing of when and where the unlimited potential of transformational leadership will serve you and your team best.
